Description

Overview

The HaseMed Breathing Trainer with 3-Chamber System is a volume-oriented incentive spirometer designed to support respiratory rehabilitation, post-operative lung recovery and structured inspiratory muscle training. Built around three transparent chambers with graded flow resistance and three colour-coded floating balls (red, yellow, blue), the device gives patients and clinicians an immediate visual cue of inspiratory flow and sustained deep breathing effort. A flexible corrugated tube connects the trainer to an angled, ergonomic mouthpiece, so exercises can be performed comfortably in a seated or semi-reclined position on the ward, in the physiotherapy practice or at home.

Clinical Rationale

Shallow breathing patterns, prolonged bed rest and thoracic or abdominal surgery can reduce functional residual capacity and impair mucociliary clearance. Incentive spirometry is a well-established, low-cost method used by physiotherapists, respiratory therapists and pulmonology teams to encourage sustained maximal inspiration (SMI). By inhaling slowly and deeply through the mouthpiece, the patient lifts the weighted balls in sequence, working against calibrated flow resistance and reinforcing diaphragmatic recruitment. The 3-chamber design makes progression objective: each raised ball represents a measurable flow milestone that both patient and therapist can track across sessions.

Highlights & Benefits

  • Three graded flow chambers: Colour-coded floating balls with visible cc/sec markings provide a clear, step-by-step target for inspiratory flow and lung volume training.
  • Visual biofeedback: Transparent chambers let patients and therapists see exactly how long each ball is held in suspension, supporting sustained maximal inspiration technique.
  • Ergonomic mouthpiece and flexible tubing: Angled mouthpiece and soft corrugated hose allow relaxed posture, minimise air leaks and accommodate bedside use.
  • Portable and lightweight: Compact footprint for ward trolleys, rehabilitation gyms and home-based exercise programmes prescribed after discharge.
  • Clinician-friendly progression: Objective, repeatable targets simplify documentation of inspiratory effort and adherence across rehabilitation sessions.
  • Easy to clean: Detachable mouthpiece and tubing can be rinsed between uses as part of a single-patient hygiene protocol.

Intended Users & Use Cases

  • Post-operative recovery: Supports lung re-expansion exercises after thoracic, cardiac or abdominal surgery once the treating clinician has cleared the patient for incentive spirometry.
  • COPD and chronic respiratory conditions: Structured inspiratory training as part of a pulmonary rehabilitation programme for patients with COPD, bronchiectasis or restrictive lung disease.
  • Physiotherapy and respiratory therapy: A visual teaching aid for breathing re-education, pursed-lip breathing technique coaching and diaphragmatic recruitment.
  • Neuromuscular weakness: Adjunct tool for patients with reduced inspiratory muscle strength where low-resistance, volume-based training is indicated.
  • Prolonged immobilisation: Helps counteract the effects of bed rest on tidal volume and atelectasis risk during extended hospital stays.
  • Home exercise continuity: Enables patients to continue prescribed breathing exercises between outpatient physiotherapy appointments.

How It Works

Each of the three chambers contains a lightweight ball that rises when the patient inhales through the mouthpiece. The chambers are calibrated so that progressively higher inspiratory flow is required to lift the second and third balls. The goal is typically not simply to lift all three balls as quickly as possible, but to raise and hold the target ball with a slow, steady, deep inhalation for as long as comfortable. This trains both inspiratory volume and endurance of the respiratory muscles.

Application

Follow the individual treatment plan provided by the physiotherapist or treating clinician. A typical session looks like this:

  • Sit upright or semi-reclined with the shoulders relaxed and the trainer held vertically.
  • Exhale normally, then seal the lips firmly around the mouthpiece.
  • Inhale slowly and deeply through the mouthpiece, keeping the flow steady rather than forceful, to raise the target ball in a controlled manner.
  • Hold the inspiration briefly at the top of the breath if tolerated, then remove the mouthpiece and exhale passively through pursed lips away from the device.
  • Rest between repetitions to avoid hyperventilation or dizziness; repeat for the number of sets prescribed by the treating clinician.

Start with low intensity and progress gradually as inspiratory capacity improves. Quality and control of each breath are more important than speed. Patients should stop the exercise and seek advice from their clinician if they experience dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath or persistent coughing.

Important Notes

Single-patient use only. For hygiene reasons, the trainer should not be shared between individuals. Clean the mouthpiece and tubing before first use and regularly thereafter by rinsing in warm water with a mild cleaning agent and allowing all parts to dry completely before reassembly. This device is intended as a training aid and does not replace medical diagnosis, prescribed therapy or acute respiratory care. Use only according to the instructions and under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional when indicated.
