Separate the target panel from the sampling method
Respiratory rapid tests vary in two ways: what they detect and how the sample is collected. A COVID-19 kit may offer more than one swab method while still testing only for SARS-CoV-2. A respiratory combo panel adds specified targets such as influenza A/B, RSV or adenovirus. Read the target list rather than interpreting every 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 label as a multi-virus panel.
Choose a single-target or combo format
Browse COVID-19 tests for SARS-CoV-2 antigen options. For a comparison of COVID-19 and flu panels intended for self-testing, use COVID, flu and RSV combo self-tests. Professional respiratory panels have their own user requirements and may include a broader target list.
Compare kit requirements
Check the permitted sample type, intended user, age limits, number of tests and any equipment required. The supplied instructions specify collection depth, extraction procedure, drop count and result window. Do not substitute an oral sample for a nasal sample or use one brand's procedure with another brand's cassette.
The named targets define the scope of each test. An antigen result does not establish the cause of every respiratory symptom or replace a clinical assessment. For respiratory testing in a practice, see professional respiratory combo test selection.
